Can You Respec Your Skills in Starfield?

Choosing your character's skills in Starfield is a significant decision that can greatly impact your gameplay experience.

Choosing your character's skills in Starfield is a significant decision that can greatly impact your gameplay experience. As your character levels up, you earn skill points, which you can invest in five categories: Physical, Social, Combat, Science, and Tech. But what if you want to change your skill choices later? Can you respec your skills? Let's explore your options.

No Skill Refund: A Permanent Choice

In Starfield, once you allocate skill points to a particular skill or category, it becomes a permanent decision. There's no in-game mechanism to refund or reset your skill points. This permanence can significantly affect how your character plays and evolves throughout the game.

Console Commands: A Technically Possible But Not Recommended Option

While there's technically a way to change your character's skills using console commands on PC, it comes with significant drawbacks. You can use these commands to add or remove specific skills without any in-game exchange. However, doing so will mark your save as "Modded," which disables the ability to earn achievements on that file. There are mods available that can remove the "Modded" label, but using them can complicate your gaming experience.

Two Alternative Options: Start Anew or Beat the Game

If you genuinely want to select different skills without resorting to console commands or mods, you have two alternative options:

  1. Create a New Character: You can start a new character from scratch, allowing you to make different skill choices right from the beginning. This option is ideal if you want to explore a completely different character build.

  2. Unlock New Game Plus: Another way to reset your character's progression is by completing the game on your current character. This achievement will unlock New Game Plus, which allows you to start over while retaining some of your progress. However, this option requires finishing the game first.

Changing Your Character's Appearance

If you're looking to alter your character's appearance, Starfield does offer an option for that. You can modify your character's looks without affecting your skills.

Respec in Starfield Using Console Commands (PC Only)

For those on PC willing to use console commands despite the achievement restrictions, here's how you can perform a sort of respec:

  1. Open the console using the (`) key on your keyboard.

  2. To remove a skill or perk, use the command "player.removeperk (Perk ID)."

  3. To add a new skill or perk in place of the removed one, use the command "player.addperk (Perk ID)."

Please note that these console commands are exclusive to the PC version of the game. Additionally, while this method allows you to make skill changes, it will disable achievements in your playthrough.

In summary, while there are ways to adjust your character's skills in Starfield, it's crucial to weigh the trade-offs carefully. You can use console commands on PC but at the cost of achievements, or you can choose to start fresh with a new character or complete the game for a New Game Plus experience. Make your choice wisely and enjoy your interstellar adventure!
