Cillian Murphy has found himself a frontrunner of the intensifying Oscar race this year for his J. Robert Oppenheimer in the Christopher Nolan biographical epic. We are all thrilled to find out exactly how many nominations and wins the praised movie shall sweep away at this year’s Academy Awards.
Surprisingly, that’s not all that Cillian Murphy has been working on! A press release by the Berlin International Film Festival, Berlinale for short, announced their first night opener, Small Things Like These, and it stars none other than our beloved Irish actor in the lead role.

Along with Cillian Murphy, the cast includes a few other known industry names like Emily Watson and Ciarán Hinds.
The English Oscar-nominated actress Emily Watson is most famous for her roles in Breaking the Waves (1996), Punch-Drunk Love (2002), and The Book Thief (2013). Ciarán Hinds is recognized for an array of colorful movies and TV shows, but his recent credits include the Best-Picture-Oscar-nominee Belfast (2021).

Small Things Like These: Plot
The film is set on Christmas in 1985, when Bill Furlong, a coal merchant and a father, is faced with some terrible discoveries about his town’s convent and about his own self. We’re talking about secrets related to a chain of asylums run by Roman Catholic institutions with the objective of reforming young women.
Cillian Murphy is not only in the lead role but also acts as one of the producers along with Matt Damon and Ben Affleck. You heard right. Based on a 2021 novel of the same name by Claire Keegan (who also wrote The Quiet Girl), this movie is written by Enda Walsh and directed by Tim Mielants.

The premiere of Small Things Like These will take place on the opening night of the 74th Berlin International Film Festival on February 15, 2024.
