Even though the main selling points of the Diablo 4: Vessel of Hatred expansion are mainly the new region, Spiritborn class, Mercenaries, as well as the Dark Citadel dungeon, Blizzard has made a ton of changes to most of the existing systems in the game. One of these is based around how leveling works, as well as the paragon system that continues to progress your character even after you have completed your skill tree. With the entire system being basically reworked, we are going to go over how leveling is going to function in Vessel of Hatred, by going over all of the changes to experience, as well as the paragon board.

Diablo 4 Vessel of Hatred: Paragon & Leveling Changes

The Vessel of Hatred expansion is drastically changing how both the leveling and paragon systems work in Diablo 4. In the base game during the last few seasons, the max level cap for your characters was 100, with your skill tree points being finished at level 50 and the rest being tied to your paragon points.

All of this is changing in Vessel of Hatred, with the new level cap being set at 60, which marks the beginning of the endgame loop of Diablo 4. Once your character reaches max level, you are once again going to start earning paragon points, with 300 levels being available. All of these paragon levels are now going to be tied to your account rather than your character, meaning that if you start a second toon, you are going to have the same amount of paragon levels as your main. This will make creating alts much more fun and a lot easier during each season. This account-wide paragon level will be reset each season, but it will be permanent in the Eternal Realm.

What Happens to Existing Characters in Diablo 4 Vessel of Hatred?

Some players enjoy playing in the Eternal Realm more than creating a new character each season and they might be wondering how these changes will affect their roster of toons. Once Vessel of Hatred launches all existing characters above level 50 will have their experience converted into paragon levels. Here is how you can expect this change to work:

  • If your character is Level 100 currently, once these changes go into effect, your character level will be adjusted to 50, and all 200 Paragon Points your character has earned with be converted to Realm-wide Paragon Levels. If your character is Level 50 and below, nothing will change for them.
  • At the end of a season, all the Paragon experience you earned during the season will be added to your Eternal Realm characters’ Paragon experience track.

That is everything you need to know about the new leveling changes and the reworked paragon system. This new system is very similar to how it worked in Diablo 3, which is interesting as many changes over the last couple of seasons have definitely been inspired by the last installment in the series.
