Funcom's upcoming open-world survival MMO set in the intricate Dune universe will allow players to interact with the franchise's iconic religions, but not serve as holy figureheads that lead crusades across the desert planet of Arrakis.

During a recent clarification from developers at Funcom, the studio behind Dune: Awakening stated that religion plays an integral role across the Dune game. As such, players adventuring across the hostile yet beautiful Arrakis landscape will encounter diverse religious groups and factions.

However, Funcom emphasized that in Dune: Awakening, players' avatars will not take on the role of a messiah figure central to the overarching religious conflict depicted in the original Dune novel series.

Developers explained:

"Leading people on a holy war is not why you arrive on Arrakis."

So while players can expect to see reflections of the Zensunni wanderers, Fremen tribes, and other iconic Dune religious sects during their survival exploits, they will experience these faiths from an outsider's perspective.

The Main Story of Dune: Awakening Won't Be About Religion

The developers clarified that while religious elements will be present in Dune: Awakening, the main story won't heavily focus on this aspect. The goal is to stay true to the source material while allowing players the freedom to create their own paths.

By avoiding positioning players in religious leadership roles, Dune: Awakening steers clear of repetitive story elements found in the original Dune books and film adaptations.

This approach allows the game to concentrate more on the harsh survival and political challenges players will encounter while striving to control the desert's valuable spice resource.
