You'll get the best results if you start the attack up close to benefit from multiple hits before the throw, enhancing stagger potential and follow-up opportunities. While the normal move set is effective, the heavy attack’s ability to stagger most enemies makes it stand out among other Shadow of the Erdtree weapons.
