NOTE: The information in this article is based on Kit Harington's interview and not an official statement from HBO.
Back in 2022, it was first revealed that Jon Snow would be getting his series depicting his life after the events that took place in Game of Thrones. Contrary to what you might think, fans weren't excited for the spin-off and were expecting it to be bad. It seems that now HBO also agrees with the audience's concerns. Although Game of Thrones will be having a lot of additional sequels and prequels, the Jon Snow spinoff won't be one of them. Or at least not for now. Check out everything we know!

Kit Harington Talking About the Jon Snow Spinoff
Even though the Jon Snow spinoff has been rumored for years now, Kit Harington recently revealed that the production team has given up on this Game of Thrones project. In an interview with ScreenRant, the actor shared HBO's final decision not to pursue the series. However, the cancellation seems to be for the better, as the main reason for it was simply that nothing seemed 'good enough.' Here is what the lead actor had to say:
I hadn't really ever spoken about it, because it was in development. I didn't want it leaked out that it was being developed, and I didn't want the thing to happen where people kind of start theorizing, getting either excited about it or hating the idea of it, when it may never happen. Because in development, you look at every angle, and you see whether it's worth it.
And currently, it's not. Currently, it's off the table, because we all couldn't find the right story to tell that we were all excited about enough. So, we decided to lay down tools with it for the time being. There may be a time in the future where we return to it, but at the moment, no. It's firmly on the shelf.
Sometimes it's better to leave a story finished, though it's unfortunate to see Kit's efforts go to waste. Despite the spinoff's production being barely publicized, both HBO and Kit Harington's excitement and motivation for its creation were evident. Reports indicated that Harington was the one brainstorming many ideas for the show and even brought his team to contribute to the working process. However, as of now, the Jon Snow spinoff has been more or less officially canceled.

Why the Jon Snow Spinoff Is a Bad Idea
The majority of Game of Thrones fans were left unsatisfied with the way things turned out for Jon Snow at the end of the show as if that was the only issue with the ending.
After killing Daenerys Targaryen, Jon is banished to the Night's Watch, and we see him leaving with the wildlings. It's an unfortunate turn of events for the King in the North, who also turned out to be a Targaryen with a right to claim the Iron Throne. It's understandable why his ending didn't sit right with fans.
However, his story was complete at the end of Game of Thrones. If HBO were to continue Jon's journey, it would mean that the entire story of the main show has to continue somehow. This includes many main characters joining the production. The more you think about it, the messier and less likely it seems. How could Harington's team and HBO find a way to focus solely on Jon Snow and not turn the spinoff into Game of Thrones Season 9?

Despite everything, Kit Harington did leave the fate of this spinoff open-ended, stating that if good ideas emerge, HBO would be willing to make it happen. Until then, Jon Snow's sequel remains a closed chapter.
This isn't necessarily bad news, as HBO is preparing a wealth of content and adaptations for the Game of Thrones universe that sounds incredibly exciting. Confirmed spinoffs include House Of The Dragon Season 2, A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight, Nine Voyages, 10,000 Ships, Aegon's Conquest, and more.
