New details have emerged from the recent Grand Theft Auto 5 source code leak that shows the original planned endings for GTA 5. They were much more gruesome. But now, the brutal and gruesome original endings for GTA 5 are canceled, although the original expansions offer an intriguing look at what the game could have been.

In the final game, players can choose to kill either Trevor or Michael during end-game missions. The leaked source code reveals that these deaths were originally intended to be more graphic.

If Michael was chosen to die, Franklin would drop him from a tower into the spinning rotor blades of a police helicopter, chopping him to pieces. For Trevor's death, he would be frozen in liquid nitrogen by Michael before being smashed to bits with a 2x4 plank.

The final released versions of GTA 5 spared players these gruesome fates, instead having Michael simply fall from the tower to his death, while Trevor is burned alive after being doused in gasoline.

In addition to the altered ending deaths, the recent leak provides insight into planned single-player DLC expansions for GTA 5 that never saw release. Nearly a dozen possible DLCs are referenced, including:

  • Agent Trevor
  • Relationship Pack
  • LibertyV pack hinting at Liberty City
  • Prologue DLC
  • SP Manhunt Pack
  • SP Norman Pack
  • SP Assassination Pack
  • Enterprise Pack

With GTA Online being a continuous money maker for Rockstar, it's probable these single-player DLC ideas were recycled into future online content updates instead.

The brutal original endings and canceled expansions offer an intriguing look at what GTA 5 could have been. While the game was still massively successful, some fans may have preferred to play through the more graphic finale Rockstar had first envisioned for Trevor and Michael. The leaks provide a small window into the evolution of one of gaming's most iconic worlds.
