In Starfield, you have the ability to enhance your weapons in various ways, allowing for increased customization and improved performance. This guide will walk you through the mechanics of weapon mods and provide insights on crafting powerful weapons in the game.
How Weapon Mods Function
Weapon Mods are craftable enhancements that can be integrated into your base weapon. Unlike separate items kept in your inventory, these mods modify specific components of your weapon, such as the muzzle, laser, barrel, magazine, and more. When you access the Weapon Workbench, all the available component parts open for modification will be listed.
To craft a mod, you must unlock the corresponding Research Project, which reveals the crafting recipe. These Research Projects can be found in the Weaponry category of the Research Lab terminal. Access to these projects may require certain skills and skill points in your character's skill tree. The Weapons Engineering skill is particularly important but necessitates skill points from the level above in the skill tree to become accessible. Additionally, specific resources must be contributed as research materials to complete the research.
Installing Weapon Mods
To create a Weapon Mod, visit a Weapon Workbench. Select the weapon you wish to modify, and a list of available mods will appear.
As previously mentioned, crafting mods requires specific physical resources, ranging from natural materials like rocks to synthetic materials such as polymer, adhesive, solvent, and lubricant. If you lack the necessary materials for crafting and installing a mod, the option will be greyed out.
It's important to note that resources stored in your ship's cargo hold will be accessible as resources at any workbench. However, you won't be able to access storage from other containers or your companion's inventory.
Tips & Tricks for Weapon Mods
Here are some useful tips and tricks to expedite your progress as you craft and install weapon mods:

Crafting and removing a "No Mod" in the crafting menu or restoring the gun to its original state before modification counts as crafting a mod for leveling your Weapons Engineering skill. This can be repeated multiple times for skill advancement. Removing mods typically does not require rare resources, only common organic materials like Iron and Nickel.

Gaining modded weapons from enemies and using common resources to remove these mods is another effective way to level up the skill, even if you decide to sell the modified weapon afterward. Pay attention to specific prefixes like "Calibrated," as they indicate stronger base damage for the weapon.

If you lack a particular resource, utilize the 'Track' function on the Research Category screen to identify required resources. As you explore, a blue magnifying glass icon will indicate item names containing the needed resource, whether at vendors, in containers, or on planets.

To avoid wasting time searching for specific resources on unsuitable planets, hover over the resources listed on the left side of the star map screen. If the planet contains the desired resource, scan the planet to reveal the locations of these resources. This will guide you to the right landing spots for resource gathering. On the planet's surface, use your scanner to identify extractable elements by building an outpost.

Before visiting the Research Lab, consider using the Synapse Alpha aid item. This item reduces the required Research Project resources for a temporary period of 10 minutes, allowing for more efficient research.
