In Starfield, you'll encounter various dangers on different planets, often leading to afflictions and status effects that can negatively impact your character. These afflictions can go beyond just dealing damage, causing debuffs to your character in various ways. To navigate these challenges successfully, it's crucial to understand how to cure status afflictions in Starfield. This guide will provide you with tips on dealing with these afflictions.

How Afflictions are Contracted

Afflictions can be contracted in numerous ways in Starfield, primarily linked to the dangers you face while exploring hazardous planets. Exposure to radiation, extreme weather conditions, proximity to toxic vents or pools, or taking damage from various sources can all make you susceptible to status afflictions.

To protect yourself from various afflictions, look for spacesuits and gear that enhance your defenses against different ailments. These protective gear types include:

  1. Thermal - Protects you from extreme heat and cold environments.
  2. Airborne - Shields you from toxic gases, often emitted from vents and fissures.
  3. Corrosive - Defends against acidic sources like waste or alien waters, and certain vents.
  4. Radiation - Guards against solar radiation from direct sunlight when exploring planets or moons with no atmospheres.

Your spacesuit will provide limited protection from these sources, and the more concentrated the threat, the shorter the protection duration. When your protection runs out, you become more susceptible to gaining an affliction and will also suffer environmental damage, indicated by an orange bar, which reduces your maximum health. You can only clear environmental damage by seeking refuge in safe locations like your ship or an outpost that shields you from external hazards.

It's important to note that you can't cure the causes of afflictions listed in your status menu, but you can treat the symptoms resulting from exposure. For instance, you can't cure exposure to freezing cold, but you can treat frostbite that may occur as a result.

Additionally, some afflictions can be acquired through physical damage from various sources. Being attacked by infected alien life or falling from great heights can inflict injuries that require different treatments.

How to Treat Afflictions

Depending on the type of affliction you contract, you'll notice a corresponding symptom and a color-coded icon on your watch and in your character status menu. Each type of affliction has specific aid items and chems that can effectively treat it. Match the color-coded symbol to the status effect you're experiencing:

  • Purple Pill: Antibiotics, Penicillin X - Used to treat infections like Pneumonia and Encephalitis.
  • Red Bandage: Bandages, Zipper Bandages - Used for physical injuries such as Contusions, Lacerations, and Puncture Wounds.
  • Orange Drops: Heal Paste, Heal Gel - Effective against severe burns from fire and frostbite.
  • Blue Broken Bone: Immobilizer - Provides support for injured limbs and broken bones like Dislocations, Fractures, Sprains, and Torn Muscles.
  • Yellow Spray: Injector, Snake Oil - Medication for treating Brain Injuries, Concussions, Heat Stroke, Hernia, Hypothermia, Lung Damage, Poisoning, and Radiation Poisoning.

  • Panacea: Cures all types of afflictions simultaneously.
