It's been just a few weeks since the launch of Modern Warfare 3, and it seems like a lot of players have been disappointed in the amount of content available under the $70 price point. While Zombies has been a huge hit, most players have found the campaign to be too short, with the multiplayer lacking quality-of-life options and content. With this in mind, it's time to check how many active players are currently playing Modern Warfare 3 and talk about the future of the game.

Modern Warfare 3 Active Player Count December 2023
With Modern Warfare 3 being available on most consoles as well as PC, we are not able to find an accurate source for the number of players across all of them. Therefore, we will be judging the game's popularity based on the only accurate information available, which is Steamcharts. This will provide us with the accurate number of players on Steam, and we will be able to compare those numbers with the past few months to see how the game has been doing.
According to Steamcharts, Modern Warfare 3 currently has an average of 103,691 players during the last 30 days, with 191,960 playing during peak hours. While the graph makes it look like a big spike in players, we should take a look at the launch of Modern Warfare 2 and compare it directly to that.
Here we can see that the average and peak players during the launch of Modern Warfare 2 in November 2022 were much higher than the newest release of the series. These numbers are not surprising, with most players slamming Activision for putting a $70 price on a 'glorified DLC' for the game.

Is Modern Warfare 3 Dying?
While these numbers are much lower than the actual figure when you add in all of the console players, the lower peak and sharp decline are quite worrying for the future of Modern Warfare 3. The game still has millions of players logging in every day, participating in different online game modes such as Zombies and Warzone, but these numbers are going to quickly decline unless Activision steps up and releases more content and balance adjustments.
All in all, Modern Warfare 3 is currently in a healthy spot, but we are worried that a sharp decline in the player base is going to inevitably happen if there are not a lot of new incentives by Activision in the coming months. We will make sure to keep you updated on the player count throughout 2024.
