Fortnite recently introduced a creative new LEGO-themed game mode that allows players to build structures and environments out of virtual bricks. Couch co-op fans hoping to team up in local split-screen in the creative Fortnite LEGO game mode were met with disappointment. Unlike many past LEGO titles supporting two players on the same screen, Fortnite's new building sandbox currently lacks split-screen functionality.

According to an update from developer Epic Games, split-screen support does not exist in the Fornite LEGO mode at launch. While disappointing, all hope is not lost. Epic stated that split-screen is “currently unavailable” indicating it may still be added down the road via an update.

The lack of split-screen means that if you still want to squad up with your friends even though they are not sitting next to you on the sofa, they will need to join online parties and connect through the internet. Servers support up to eight players teaming up to gather resources and construct creative buildings together.

You can also grant teammates persistent access to your personally generated LEGO world even when offline through a key system. This allows for collaboration over multiple sessions.

Could a split-screen patch arrive someday? Sure. Epic regularly rolls out updates big and small. But for now, those LEGO collaborations will happen over the internet, not unlike gathering up pals in Minecraft.

So while unfortunately, you can’t pass a second controller to a friend on the same couch at the moment, there are still ample options for playing the Fortnite LEGO mode cooperatively!
