Riot Games' most recent developer update video brings about exciting news for the future of LoL's story. In the video, developers shared their plans on changing their approach to storytelling and worldbuilding.
New Approach to Runeterra's Lore
Riot Games is looking into further expanding the mediums through which they showcase new stories. This could drastically improve the fascinating world they have built over the years, and possibly finally bring to light some missing pieces or champions that have been sitting in the dark for too long.
For a long time, League and associated experiences like short stories were our only way to tell stories in Runeterra. Nowaday's, though, that's no longer the case.
- Andrei Van Roon Meddler, Game Lead at Riot Games
It is great to hear that the creative team is getting more recognition behind the amazing work they have done so far. Although some players are quick to disregard the background of their favorite characters, the community appreciates the amount of time and effort that has been put into making the game come alive outside of its gameplay.
Over the years we have introduced inconsistencies that have woven their way into the storytelling and worldbuilding of Runeterra... Going forward, we don't believe that's the right approach because that kind of fragmentation makes the world less believable and it just undercuts meaningful character development.

Why Stories Matter
Beyond the scope of technical possibilities, mechanics, and gameplay, a game's longevity is determined by the aesthetic and atmosphere it is able to provide to players. Even if a studio is to release one of the most groundbreaking and technologically-advanced games, if it lacks a soul, then its simply another program running on your device.
Being able to breathe in life into something takes a lot of courage, creativity, and passion to show the whole world something beautiful, no matter what medium. Video Games have always been put down as lacking any artistic value, but thankfully, the public's perception is shifting towards appreciating amazing games with intricate and captivating stories.

What the Future Holds
As exciting as this news is, what does it mean for the future of the Runeterra Universe? Well, we can only guess what Riot Games have in store for players, but this announcement also lends its way to the MMO project that is currently under development.
Perhaps the developers might be preparing us for even more information in the future about the highly-anticapated game. Whatever may be the case, this direction that the company is taking is nothing more than a positive for all players, so hopefully Shaco mains will someday rejoice at having some depth to the demon jester.
