New Jenna Ortega Movie ‘Miller’s Girl’: Review

Jenna Ortega has become one of Gen Z’s leading actress powerhouses in recent years, following her portrayal of Wednesday Addams on Netflix’s Wednesday (2022) and her roles in the horror franchises Scream and A24’s X. She is back with her new movie, Miller’s Girl, playing on an intriguing and complicated student-teacher relationship with co-star Martin Freeman (Sherlock, Fargo, The Responder).

Miller’s Girl: Plot

Jenna Ortega is Cairo Sweet, a senior high school student, whose life gets intertwined in complicated ways with that of her teacher, Mr. Miller, after he gives her an interesting creative writing assignment.

The boundaries between student and teacher become blurry and confusing once Mr. Miller, a struggling writer himself, manages to inspire Cairo to write a story that could lead to their unraveling.

Miller’s Girl: Review

Jenna Ortega, as always, commands the screen with her enthralling performance that not only captures attention but also carries the stylistic themes of the story. Her appearance and demeanor are some of the moving parts of the film that are largely responsible for its effectiveness.

With that being said, Miller’s Girl tries too hard to be provocative throughout its entire runtime, to the point of overindulgence. Yes, the dialogue is dripping with eloquence and poetry, reminiscent of heavily stylized literary works, but it fails to sustain any of the suspense built up in the first half and loses its impact gradually as we reach the clumsy conclusion.

The bigger picture reminds more of a fantasy with a gothic-like aesthetic than a movie. For lovers of Jenna Ortega and the genre, there’s plenty to love about this story, but some audiences might find it controversial and challenging to enjoy. There’s only one way to find out for yourself.

Where to Watch Miller’s Girl?

The film is being released for a limited theatrical run on January 26, 2024, in various countries, soon after its debut at the Palm Springs International Film Festival. Those countries include the United States, Canada, Spain, Estonia, and Bulgaria. For Hungary and Thailand, the movie premieres a day early, on January 25. Miller’s Girl’s release date in theaters in Germany is February 22 and in Australia on March 21.

Miller’s Girl doesn’t have a streaming release date as of yet, but our guess is that it will happen pretty soon after its theatrical run is completed.
