Overwatch 2's previous fantasy-themed Season 5 brought an array of fresh content, highlighted by the annual Summer Games event featuring Lucioball and the new mode, Winston's Beach Volleyball.
Season 6, however, promises to be one of the franchise's most significant seasons to date. Alongside the addition of a new support hero and the Hero Mastery System, Overwatch 2 is finally introducing long-awaited PvE story missions, following previous delays in this aspect of the game. The Invasion storyline allows players to collaborate on three missions set in Rio de Janeiro, Toronto, and Gothenburg. Moreover, the Flashpoint mode is another exciting inclusion, incorporating elements from Control and Assault to offer multiple objectives in a match. Here, two teams compete across entirely new maps, striving to be the first to earn 3 points.
Blizzard previously confirmed Suravasa and New Junk City as the two new maps, and now the company has provided fans with a comprehensive look at both locations through the Overwatch 2 Twitter account.
Suravasa, an India-based map situated along the river Roshani, features an exquisite blend of natural and man-made structures. The video fly-through showcases stunning architecture, fountains, temples, lush trees, sprawling vines, and seamlessly integrated natural elements within the city. Keen-eyed players may even spot crocodiles lounging at the river's mouth.
In addition, Blizzard showcased New Junk City, an Australian map serving as the home of beloved characters like Roadhog, Junker Queen, and Junkrat. The city captures the essence of the outback with its sandy terrain and metal structures, akin to Junkertown's appearance. However, New Junk City stands as a massive urban environment, boasting bustling city streets, vibrant neon signs, and the iconic arena from Junker Queen's debut announcement trailer for Overwatch 2.
These exciting additions couldn't have come at a better time, as Overwatch 2 has faced some challenges lately. The recent layoff of approximately 50 employees, mainly from the eSports division, raised doubts about the future of the Overwatch League. Additionally, the Q2 2023 earnings call for Activision Blizzard revealed a decline in Overwatch 2's player count and engagement levels. With the arrival of PvE missions in Season 6, Activision Blizzard is undoubtedly hopeful to reverse this trend and reinvigorate the game's community.
