In a shocking announcement, Riot Games shared some important changes that will be coming to the company including the elimination of about 530 roles globally

It seems that the gaming and tech industries are seeing massive issues with staying afloat as more and more companies announce shocking layoffs amidst a turbulent economic state, bringing even more projects and games to a halt.

Riot Games has recently reported that some critical changes will be coming to the company as they strive to maintain relevancy and push forward their established games and IPs. The company has shared its plans moving forward as some Rioters, unfortunately, have lost their jobs due to the shift in priority.

Riot Games Layoffs

In the company's recent announcement, Rioters stated that the focus will be shifted towards its core games moving forward.

Over the past few years, as Riot more than doubled in headcount, we spread our efforts across more and more projects without sharp enough razors to decide what players needed most. The adjustments we're making aim to focus us on the areas that have the greatest impact on your experience while reducing investment on things that don’t.

In recent years, Riot Games started experimenting with even more projects as they looked to further increase their foothold in the gaming industry by tackling multiple genres, however, given the current economic environment, the company will be abandoning its creative endeavors for the time being.

This means we’re eliminating about 530 roles globally, which represents around 11% of Rioters, with the biggest impact to teams outside of core development. We recognize that many of you don’t just care about the games you play, but also about the people who make them.

Although this is terrible news for the people who dedicated their time and passion to creating fantastic new games and experiences, it seems that for the time being Riot Games will be looking towards further cementing its core games in the industry.

Riot Games Doubling Down on Games

It seems that Rioters will be focusing on their most successful games as they look to further improve and enhance the gaming experience further down the line.

Our vision for the future is bold and our commitment to our core live games – League of Legends, VALORANT, Teamfight Tactics, and Wild Rift – is more ambitious than ever. We're prioritizing these teams so they can focus on the content, features, and updates that directly respond to what you’ve been asking for.

League of Legends has been the bread and butter of Riot Games and with Valorant and Teamfight Tactics starting to become even more popular as they establish themselves on the esports scene, we might be seeing even more development being pushed into making the games even more impressive both for casual and competitive players.

Our strategy will more tightly integrate esports, music, and entertainment with our games. Esports isn't just about competition; it's about the highs, the lows, and the communities that flourish around the games. Entertainment isn't just about storytelling; it's a gateway to the deeper narratives, characters, and worlds that enrich the game experience.

It is important to take note of how much Riot Games is dedicating resources to further building up each game's universe both in-game and through external events, media, and projects that add even more depth and passion to the games beloved by many.
