If we haven't played all the previous games in the Final Fantasy series, can we dive into the newly released Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth? Feeling lost as soon as you start a new game is terrible, and not knowing the history behind the characters can be jarring, so is Rebirth worth trying out if we haven't played Final Fantasy 7 Remake?
Can I Play FF7 Rebirth Before FF7 Remake?
According to the director of the game, Naoki Hamaguchi, knowledge of the game series is not necessary. When asked if it was needed to have played previous Final Fantasy releases, he said,
No, all three of the remake project titles have been designed as standalone games in their own right, so any can be enjoyed fully, even if you haven’t experienced the previous games.
I do think it’s worthwhile to play FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE before REBIRTH, but it’s not essential. If you want to know what happened in the previous game, there is a ‘story so far’ digest movie in the game that will get you up to speed.
Even though it is part two of a trilogy, they have taken the time to consider that some gamers will have no experience with the franchise. Given the fact Final Fantasy games have been so influential to RPG culture, the first appearing in 1987, some hardcore fans will have played all of the releases. But that doesn't mean Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth has been designed just for the franchise followers.
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is attempting to bridge the gap between new players and existing members of its fan base. Adding a short movie in the beginning, explaining the previous game's events, will ease newbies into the story. Those who have played Final Fantasy 7 Remake may have more of a connection to the characters and quests, but that doesn’t mean new players won’t pick up that affection for their heroes quickly.
