Counter-Strike has seen significant growth and development, with the launch of Counter-Strike 2 representing a notable technological advancement for the franchise. Known as one of the most iconic first-person shooters, it boasts a dedicated player base, and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive has the highest rating among Valve's games on Steam. Therefore, Valve's recent decision to replace CS:GO with Counter-Strike 2 left some players bewildered, seeking clarification.

Valve chose to discontinue Counter-Strike support for macOS and older hardware, specifically DirectX 9 and 32-bit operating systems. This strategic move aims to ensure compatibility with modern technology. Valve pointed out that these outdated platforms constituted less than one percent of active CS:GO players.

The company issued detailed instructions for affected players. MacOS users who predominantly played CS:GO on their Mac and had significant playtime between the announcement of the Counter-Strike 2 Limited Test and the official launch can request a refund for a Prime Status Upgrade. Specific conditions apply, including restrictions on CD keys, gifts, and accounts with bans.

Valve has committed to offering these refunds until December 1, 2023, providing a window for affected players to decide. DirectX 9 and 32-bit Windows users who purchased the game on Steam between the announcement of the Counter-Strike 2 Limited Test and the official launch of Counter-Strike 2 can also request a refund.

Additionally, Valve offers a legacy version of CS:GO, a frozen game build, for players unable to run Counter-Strike 2. However, after January 1, 2024, access to the CS:GO legacy version will remain, but support will cease. This could potentially lead to certain in-game features deteriorating or failing, posing challenges for the future of Counter-Strike.

Valve emphasized that this decision aligns with the game's commitment to staying technologically current and the company's desire to continue developing Counter-Strike for years to come.

Despite the controversy surrounding the decision, Counter-Strike 2 has made a robust debut, showcasing the enduring support and enthusiasm for the franchise.
