The plot revolves around the Faerie, who visits regions every four years to select alms, people who must travel to the Tree of Mana, a location that regulates the world's crucial flow of mana. Val is accompanied by his childhood friend, who has been picked as the Alm.

Val now serves as his friend's Soul Guard, ensuring her safe arrival at the Tree of Mana by defeating a variety of monsters in party-based combat, including fan favorites like Rabites and Lullabuds.

Square Enix released a trailer showcasing previously unseen gameplay mechanics for Visions of Mana. In combat, you can switch between the three party members, each with their own specialization.

Careena is a mage-like lady with wings who can destroy opponents alongside her dragon companion or throw spells to help her comrades. Val attacks with a big sword, while Morley, another friend, uses his incredible speed to overwhelm foes with rapid combos.

Val looks like he’s able to use his abilities to move about the world, as we see him employing a flying skill. This can raise him onto a nearby ledge or encase him in a large bubble, allowing him to breathe underwater. We've also seen characters hop over gaps to get around obstacles like big holes.

We also learn about Pikuls, which are summonable critters that can be used to explore the open world. The footage shows a black wolf that the player can ride.

A boss was introduced in the same trailer, this time a massive praying mantis clad in armor and gauntlets. Val slashes at its torso, seemingly breaking it, but it appears that spell users harness the power of the elements to freeze it in place, rendering it dormant for a short period of time.

Along with music from past Mana series composers, the game will also feature a transitional score that alters smoothly as you enter and exit combat. The Mana series' producer, Masaru Oyamada, claims that "Visions of Mana boasts an astounding tracklist of 100 songs in total."
