WoW Tank Tier List: Dragonflight 10.2 December 2023
Blizzard Entertainment

Welcome to our updated Tank tier list for Dragonflight's Patch 10.2, updated for December 2023 after numerous balance changes to different classes, dungeons, and raids. In this article, we are going to go over every tanking spec in the game and compare them to find the best tank for high-level PvE content (Mythic+ and Raids).

When comparing these tanks, these are the things we are looking out for:

  • Damage: The amount of damage they can bring to make boss fights and dungeons shorter.
  • Survivability: How durable they are against the different tank mechanics in both Amirdrassil and the new Mythic dungeon pool.
  • Utility: Any utility that can help the group have a much smoother and easier experience in both raids and dungeons.

B Tier Tank Classes Dragonflight 10.2

Guardian Druid Class Portrait

Guardian Druid

Not much has changed for Guardian Druids in the past few weeks, meaning they are still going to be at the bottom of this list. They do bring good utility but lack the survivability and damage options of the rest of the tank specs. They are outperformed by pretty much all of the classes in both dungeons and raids.

As the strongest tank in Season 2, their fall from grace has been a sad sight to see as Guardian Druids have rarely been strong for the last couple of expansions. They are going to need a handful of balance adjustments to bring up to the level of the rest of the cast.

Brewmaster Monk

Brewmaster Monks have been in a pretty balanced spot for the past few patches. They do amazing damage numbers and bring great utility in the form of Leg Sweep, Ring of Peace, and Mystic Touch. Their biggest issue is that they lack the survivability of the classes above them in this list. The glass cannon playstyle is definitely a very interesting one for the tank role.

In Raids, they are also in the middle of the pack, being strong and weak against different encounters. With the current strength of the Mistweaver spec, they might have some trouble being brought for most of the Raid. Either way, they are in a good spot and are able to do most of the challenging PvE content in patch 10.2.

Protection Warrior Class Icon

Protection Warrior

We are placing Protection Warriors right in the middle of this tier list, as they don't really excel at anything this patch, but they are good enough to be able to do anything, but the bleeding edge content of the game. We suspect that in Mythic+ groups, Protection is going to be brought for some of the world-first keys, due to how strong Spell Reflect is in some of the dungeons.

In raids, they remain a strong choice, bringing Rallying Cry and Battle Shout. They are not going to be the best in any of the current Amirdrassil bosses, but they are definitely capable to survive everything the game throws in their way. We don't have anything special to say about Protection Warriors, so they are going to be in the middle of this list.

S Tier Tank Classes Dragonflight 10.2

Blood Death Knight Hero Icon

Blood Death Knight

Blood Death Knights have been rapidly rising in the ranks in both dungeon and raid content during patch 10.2. In dungeons, they are doing some of the highest damage numbers for a tank and this will only increase when they are able to get their hands on the new legendary axe. They are extremely tanky but with how their survivability works, we don't expect them to be doing world-first keys.

In Amirdrassil, there are a few encounters in which they are going to be required for their Grip. That combined with how tanky they are, while also bringing AMZ is going to provide them with a dedicated raid spot for a big part of this patch. Blood is definitely going to be one of the strongest tanks for the entirety of this season.

Vengeance Demon Hunter Class Icon

Vengeance Demon Hunter

While getting some slight nerfs here and there, Vengeance Demon Hunters are still the kings of Mythic+, providing some of the highest damage and definitely the most crowd control. The rework they received a few weeks ago boosted their survivability and their new tier set is among the best in the tanking role. Unless more nerfs happen, we believe that Vengeance is going to remain the best tank purely for dungeons in patch 10.2.

They are not as required for Amirdrassil, however, with them not being able to use any of their utility in the same way they can during dungeons. Still though, they are tanky enough to survive any of the Mythic bosses, which coupled with how strong they are in Mythic+, is going to keep them in the S-tier.

Protection Paladin Class Icon

Protection Paladins are in a very similar spot to Vengeance Demon Hunter, with a few small differences. They provide more than enough crowd control utility for Mythic+, while being tanky enough to survive even the hardest hits the game throws their way. They can also provide the group with a Battle Rez, which is invaluable with the rise of Augmentation Evokers and Discipline Priests. We definitely think they are going to be competing head-to-head with Vengeance in Mythic+.

For raids, they remain a strong option, being tanky enough to survive anything, while also being able to boost their group with Blessing of Protection and Spellwarding. If you are looking for a tank that will be able to do pretty much anything in PvE content during patch 10.2, we highly recommend both Protection Paladins and Vengeance Demon Hunters.

Those were our picks for the best and worst tanks you can play in any high-level PvE content in Patch 10.2 of World of Warcraft Dragonflight. Keep in mind that these tier lists are purely for the hardest content in the game and all of them are able to get you Keystone Hero or Cutting Edge withtout issues.
