With Wuthering Waves’ release tomorrow, May 23, players will undoubtedly want to get the best units as soon as possible.
Jiyan will be the first limited 5-star character to appear in the game, and as such, a lot of players will wonder if it will be worth it to pull for Jiyan or save their wishes and Astrite for future characters.
In this opinion piece, we will talk about whether Jiyan is worth it and whether you should pull him as your first Limited Character.
Table of Contents
Who is Jiyan?
Jiyan is a 5-star character following the Aero element. He uses a broadsword to fight, but given that you’ll be in his ultimate form most of the time, you’ll see him use his spear way more often.
If you’ve played Genshin Impact, Jiyan will likely remind you of a mix between Xiao and Zhong Li, which can explain why he’s so popular in the community.
There’s a lot to his lore, but we won’t go into any details on that. Other people can give you better and more accurate information on that topic. What we’ll focus on is Jiyan’s cool factor and how he fits combat-wise into the game.

Is Jiyan Strong?
The short answer to that question would be yes; he is ridiculously strong. Being the first 5-star limited unit to appear in the game, Jiyan is going to take the spotlight as the strongest DPS for the next few patches.
He is an amazing damage dealer who can not only deal good single-target damage, but his ultimate ability allows him to hold his own against a group of enemies as well.
Overall, a really solid pick for any beginner who is sure to carry you through the bulk of Wuthering Waves. However, that is mostly it.
As with any other gacha game, DPS units are sadly the first units to be power crept, and Jiyan is unlikely to be an exception. Although he will be the strongest DPS character on release, he will likely fall in the rankings after 2-3 patch cycles. This poses the question of whether Jiyan is worth pulling for.

Should you Pull for Jiyan?
To be honest, there is no correct answer here. No one can tell you if you should pull for Jiyan or not. All I can do is tell you that he’s going to be an awesome first pick that will likely make your experience through the game a bit easier.
His play style is a mix of normal and heavy attacks, with some aero combat mixed into it, and flash is the best way to describe it. If you enjoy this kind of playstyle, then Jiyan will be right up your alley.
However, the sad thing is that, as with any other DPS character in any other gacha game, Jiyan will likely be power crept sooner than any other role.
Although he’s going to be the strongest DPS unit on release, that will quickly change after just a few patch cycles.
But does that matter? Well, it depends. If you’re trying to optimize your account to be the best and are going to experience Wuthering Waves as a free-to-play player, then you should consider if you want to pull for Jiyan.
As I’ve already mentioned, gacha games tend to power creep DPS units way quicker than, let’s say, supports. As such, it is always hard to confidently say that you should pull for any specific DPS unit, as they will likely fall off quite soon.
But that is only if you’re trying to optimize your account to the utmost level. If you’re a casual player who loves Jiyan’s design, and to be honest, who wouldn’t, while also enjoying his playstyle, then Jiyan is definitely a must-pull character who will make your time in Wuthering Waves that much more enjoyable.

Summary and TLDR
This has gotten quite long, so let’s summarize it quickly for those of you who just want the meat and potatoes to see if you should pull for Jiyan or not.
We’ve set up a quick list of pros and cons for him to help you get a better idea of whether you should pull for this character or not.
PROS:
- Best damage dealer on release
- Easy to play
- First Limited Character
- Cool design
CONS:
- Prone to power creep
- Limited Character
- Needs Ultimate
All in all, if we were to place a scale from 1 to 5, with 5 being a must-pull and 1 being a no-way! Then Jiyan will likely sit right around 3.5.
He is a good damage dealer that will surely make your experience easier when starting, but given that he’s a Limited Character, you will still have to spend premium wishes to get him, and his being a DPS unit makes him susceptible to power creep, which is why his rating goes slightly down.
But as with any game of this kind, don’t let anyone tell you who to pull for and who to skip. Look at the characters, try them out, and decide for yourselves without having any regrets afterward or making any bad financial decisions.
