Is Starfield Woke?

Starfield has finally made its debut, offering players the vast expanse of space to explore. However, a significant online discussion about the game revolves around its character creation system and its handling of flexible pronouns.

Bethesda

Starfield joins the ranks of Bethesda's popular RPGs (Role Playing Games) that have always emphasized player choice and varied approaches to advancing in the game.

In their quest to create "their biggest RPG ever," Bethesda expanded not only the physical size of the game world but also the range of options available to players at every gameplay level.

This ambition resulted in Bethesda's most intricate character creation system to date, offering numerous traits, skills, and backgrounds to choose from. However, this flexibility has left some players feeling that certain aspects of character customization are overly detailed.

Why the Controversy Over Pronouns in Starfield?

Debates about pronouns in character creation came to the forefront when a streamer gained attention on social media for a two-minute rant about creating a character in Starfield.

British streamer Heel VS Babyface expressed his frustration, claiming that his immersion in the science fiction space RPG was shattered when asked to select pronouns for his character.

He exclaimed, "I love nothing more than being dragged out at every conceivable opportunity so that you can 'current day' us!"

While some players have echoed his sentiments, asserting that their immersion was also disrupted, several prominent content creators have defended the game's decision and even ridiculed the streamer, including Hasan and The Act Man.

Dr Disrespect had a similar reaction when he first encountered the character creation screen, where he stared at the pronouns option in disbelief for several seconds. He then suggested that Bethesda denied him access to the game due to his displeasure with how it handled gender identity, saying, "He/him... Got it, okay. Now everything's starting to make sense."

What Has Bethesda Said About Starfield's Character Creation?

Bethesda has not officially commented on the ongoing debates regarding the game's approach to character pronouns and its treatment of gender identity.

During the in-depth Starfield showcase, Bethesda's team mentioned that the character creation system was designed to enable players to "create highly detailed and diverse characters." They emphasized that players could choose the depth of their journey, offering more choices than ever before.
