One of the most anticipated features of Patch 7 is the official Baldur’s Gate 3 modding toolkit. This toolkit will allow players to create and share their own mods, bringing new weapons, armor, classes, spells, and even custom dice skins to the game. Whether you’re an experienced modder or new to the scene, these tools are designed to be user-friendly.

The new modding will make it easier for BG3 players and creators to access and manage mods across all platforms. The official support will provide better compatibility and stability, addressing issues caused by game updates and conflicts between third-party mods.

  • Mods are already a thing in Baldur's Gate 3 and we have plenty of articles about it. However, this tool will help fans of the game run and create modded content much easier.

Two-Phase Testing Process

The testing of Patch 7 and the new modding tools will happen in two phases:

  • Phase 1: Closed Alpha (Starting June 3rd)
A small group of community mod authors will start testing the modding tools and help refine the tools and adapt their existing mods to the new system. More mod authors will be invited to join as the phase progresses afterward.
  • Phase 2: Closed Beta (Starting in July)
Registrations for the closed beta will open and Larian Studios will choose around 1,000 PC players to join it. Players will test mods created during the alpha phase. Feedback collected during this phase will help polish the final release of Patch 7.

What is Mod.io?

Larian Studios

Mod.io is the platform that will support Baldur's Gate 3 modding tools, allowing mods to be downloaded and managed on both PCs and consoles.

Modding Platform Availability

In the beginning, the modding tools will be available for PC players only. Later on, support will expand to Mac, PlayStation, and Xbox platforms. This will happen shortly after.

Mods Curation and Selection

Mods on PC will undergo stability and Terms of Service checks before becoming available in the game’s browser. For consoles, an additional curation process will determine which PC mods are suitable for cross-platform support. Not all PC mods will be available on consoles, but guidelines will be provided to help creators understand what content is acceptable.

  • Some NSFW mods and extensive scripting changes won't be official.
  • These mods can still be created and shared outside of the official system, though they may not receive full technical support.
