As with any other game, Black Myth Wukong requires you to use an armor set if you want to survive the monster fights you will encounter. Of course, you can easily craft armor, but first, you have to unlock it as a craftable item.
The good news is that the more you progress, the more armor sets you will gain access to, but keep in mind that you will need different materials for each piece.

Black Myth Wukong How To Unlock New Armor
Although this is quite random and the reward isn't guaranteed, you can stumble upon a piece of armor while opening chests during your adventures. However, the best method is to defeat bosses, such as Guangzhi and Whiteclad Noble. The latter unlocks the Serpentscale set, and Guangzhi will grant you the Pilgrim set.
It's not mandatory to obtain and use all pieces of the same armor, but if you do that, you will be able to activate the Unique Effect of the set. For example, if you equip two pieces of the Pilgrim set, you will sprint faster; if you equip all four, you will also increase the damage of your attacks, and you will get the Swift Pilgrim Effect.
