Off the Pilfered Path is the final quest in Hugo's storyline. To start this mission, you first need to complete Shadowed Prayers and Mercy Among Thieves. We also recommend completing Short-Sighted Ambition and Every Rose Has Its Thorn as well because they play a role in the outcomes.
Off the Pilfered Path is essentially the ending to these quests. This mission has multiple outcomes so if you choose to do something different from this walkthrough, that’s okay. This guide is simply to show you as many outcomes as possible.
Be aware this quest is time-sensitive so make sure you complete each step as soon as possible, otherwise you can fail.

Where to Start Off the Pilfered Path in Dragon’s Dogma 2
If you have completed the needed quests, head to Bakbattahl and look for Benjamin outside the gaol. He will let you know that he apprehended another member of the Coral Snakes and suggests you go and see him. Head into the prison and look for a prisoner called Brefft.
Start a conversation with Brefft and don’t leave him alone until he gives you all the information you need.
- The first piece of intel you need is that while Lanzo raised Hugo since his parents died, it was actually Lanzo who murdered them.
- The second piece of information you need to learn is that the Coral Snakes’ new hideout is at the Ancient Battleground in Vermund.
Hugo will now be available to talk to so head over to his cell and start a conversation. Do not tell him the truth about his parents because this might end with his death. Hugo will ask if you think someone like him can make an honest living. Players should tell him that they do think it's possible.
Hugo doesn’t have the contacts or the gold to get out so it will be up to you to bribe the guards. You can start the process of getting him released by bribing a guard but it’s not necessary. Head straight to the Ancient Battleground and deal with Lanzo. He isn’t particularly strong, but a few bandits are helping him. Take them out first and then deal with the boss.

You can now return to Hugo and tell him the truth about his parents. He will be understandably upset and will say no more. Leave the prison and rest for a day at the inn or on a bench. The next day you will learn Hugo has escaped, killing the other Coral Snake as he did.
He heads to the Ancient Battleground to get revenge, and that is why we dealt with Lanzo first because this could have ended with Hugo’s death. If you did tell Hugo the truth, you can still save him if you hurry. If he does die, you can use a Wakestone to revive him but players have reported this doesn’t always work.

Dragon's Dogma 2: Hugo's Job Options
Go and talk to Hugo. He will want to leave the bandit life but won’t have any idea where to start finding an honest job.
- If you have completed Short-Sighted Ambition and achieved the bad ending, with Isaac’s family dead and the shop closed down, you can advise Hugo to become a merchant.
- If you have finished the Every Rose Has Its Thorn quest and romanced Wilhelmina, you can recommend Hugo join the guard.
- If you haven’t managed to complete those quests yet, you can go and do so now. Hugo will wait at the Ancient Battleground until you return.
As soon as Hugo has some advice about a new job, the quest will end. You will receive 4,000 XP, 7,000 gold, the White-Leather Kerchief, and the Frosted Edges blades for completing Off the Pilfered Path.
Celebrate and rejoice in your greatness. You have not only dismantled the Coral Snakes but you have also saved Hugo from a life of thievery. Not bad for a day’s work. Check out our guides for the Phantom Oxcart, Spellbound, and A New Godsway quests.
