Step 1: Investigate the Area

The quest begins by investigating the area around Harpers Ferry. As you approach, a miscellaneous objective will appear, directing you to three terminals located at the fortified entrances to the town.

Access one of these terminals and search through the entries to learn about a group of Free States members who went out tracking ghouls but never returned. Their last known location was an area north of Valley Galleria, up on a cliff.

Step 2: Find Hardball

Proceed to the marked area north of Valley Galleria, either by following the railroad tracks and taking the path up the cliff or by fast-traveling to Tanagra Town and making your way from there.

In this area, you'll encounter Hardball, a Free States Mister Gutsy bot, standing guard over the corpses of two missing Free States members, Courtney Kelly and Jacqueline Murphy.

Hardball will task you with locating a signal booster, summoning a Cargobot at Camp Venture, and attaching the booster to track a distress beacon.

Step 3: Locate the Signal Booster

The signal booster can be found in one of two locations:

  1. The electronics store in Valley Galleria.
  2. Harpers Ferry.

Search these areas thoroughly to locate the signal booster.

Step 4: Summon the Cargobot

Once you've obtained the signal booster, travel to Camp Venture. At the landing pad, interact with the terminal to summon a Cargobot. When the Cargobot arrives and lands on the pad, attach the signal booster to it.

Step 5: Track the Distress Beacon

After attaching the signal booster, track the distress signal to its source near the Southern Belle Motel, at the base of one of the large power line pylons originating from Thunder Mountain.

At this location, you'll find the corpses of two more deceased Free States members, Randy Calloway and Nari Samir. Recover the prototype hazmat suit from Nari's backpack, along with any other useful items.

From their remains, you'll learn that the rest of the missing party members, led by Duncan McKann, ventured into the sewers beneath the Dyer Chemical facility.

Step 6: Enter the Dyer Chemical Sewers

Head to the Dyer Chemical facility and locate the entrance to the sewers on the western side, near the river. Be careful, as this area is patrolled by various robots, including Mister Gutsies, Protectrons, Robobrains, and potentially even a Sentry Bot.

Once inside the sewers, fight your way through the Feral Ghouls until you locate the remaining members of the missing party: Duncan McKann, Sara Samir, Kendyll Sims, and Lucy Harwick.

Follow this path to get to the last Holotape:

  • After you're in, go straight and then turn left
  • Go into the pipe on the right side
  • Turn left
  • Keep going straight, and then turn right to get up the set of stairs
  • Right after you enter the door, turn right and go down the stairs
  • You'll find Lucy behind the machines

Step 7: Uncover the Truth

Recover the Holotape from the body of Lucy Harwick to learn the tragic fate of Duncan McKann's group. This Holotape will provide the final pieces of the puzzle, revealing what led to their death.

Upon completing this step, the "Tracking Unknowns" quest will be marked as completed, and you'll receive the Suppressor's Pyrolyzer, a substantial amount of caps, and experience points based on your Intelligence (INT) stat.
