Rank Changes in Ranked Split 2

Riot Games

Earlier Riot Games tried to fix negative LP gains, particularly in the Emerald to Master tiers, caused by Demotion protection. To address this issue in Ranked games, several adjustments were made during the first split of 2024, including fixing placement discrepancies and reducing LP gains/losses. This resulted in a massive decrease in negative LP gains, according to the dev report.

Rank Placement Changes

With the introduction of the new three-split system, Apex players didn't have a fun time re-climbing to their previous ranks. To make this situation better in League of Legends, the maximum rank achievable after provisional matches has been raised from Emerald I to Diamond III.

  • Additionally, measures are being taken to detect and address manipulative behavior.

Demotion Changes

Riot Games

League of Legends developers want to create a better experience for Ranked players when it comes to climbing. Demotions between divisions will now occur more fluidly, with LP smoothly transitioning between divisions.

Demotions between tiers will still have protection, with players demoting to 25, 50, or 75 LP depending on their actual skill level. Extreme cases of misplacement will result in quicker drops in ranks to ensure players reach their actual rank efficiently. Essentially, this is Riot's way of making sure everyone has the right Rank. If players lose a lot - they will be demoted quickly.

Master Duo Queue is Returning

League of Legends is reintroducing Master Duo Queue. This change will supposedly balance queue times and social play. By moving the duo queue cutoff up from Master to Grandmaster, more players can enjoy the game with friends while keeping the competitive aspect of Ranked. These changes will be piloted in all regions except for China and Korea.

More Upcoming Ranked Changes

There are a lot of improvements, but League of Legends players know the game is never truly optimized and there's always a lot more work left to do. Ranked and matchmaking will keep being optimized by the Riot team. They will also try to balance on-role vs off-role play, improve seeding for new LoL players, address alt account issues, and update queue times.

Summary

In Ranked Split 2, LoL players can expect four major changes:

  • Provisional games may now place LoL players as high as Diamond III, up from Emerald I.
  • Demotion protection between divisions will be removed, allowing for smoother and quicker transitions between divisions.
  • Demoting from tiers will place players at 25 / 50 / 75 LP depending on their MMR compared to their rank at the time of demotion.
  • Master Duo Queue will be enabled in most regions, with the availability stopping again at Grandmaster.

Are you excited for LoL Ranked Split 2? We sure are. Practice and climb while you still can. This is only the beginning of Season 14!
