The Smiling Critters are yet another creation of the Playtime Co. Factory. They were arguably the most popular toys of the company and even had their own show. Later on, they became the mascots of Playtime and were also chosen to be a part of the Bigger Bodies Initiative.

In Poppy Playtime Chapter 3, we were introduced to the Smiling Critters, only to discover how tragic their fates were. All of the animals died after the Hour of Joy, but there are many uncertainties surrounding their deaths. Of course, Cat Nap is the sole survivor of the group and becomes one of the main suspects behind the Smiling Critters' deaths.

In this chapter, we came across cardboard cutouts of all the Smiling Critters that gave us clues about what happened to each of them. Here are some fan theories supported by evidence from the game, each critter's qualities, and what we heard from the cutouts.

Find out how all the Smiling Critters died in Poppy Playtime Chapter 3.

Bubba Bubbaphant

Bubba Bubbaphant is considered the smartest member of the Smiling Critters.

His voice lines highlight his exceptional memory, which is inherent in elephants. At the end of his recording, Bubba screams agonizingly, but we can also hear him laughing at the same time.

As strange as this might seem, we can actually connect this to Cat Nap. In the Smiling Critters' show, all the animals beg Cat Nap to help them fall asleep with his smoke. Bubba was actually the first one to ask him.

As we saw, Cat Nap's red smoke made them all laugh hysterically before falling asleep. If the smoke he uses there has the same effects as the one in the game, it wouldn't be surprising if Cat Nap was using it on Bubba to kill him.

Kickin Chicken

Kickin Chicken is the cool, easy-going member of the group, able to keep his composure in any situation.

However, his voice lines reveal his scared side, as he asks us to accompany him in leaving the building. Despite his fear, Kickin Chicken attempts to leave anyway. Then we hear his scream, indicating that his attempt ultimately resulted in his death.

As we know from Poppy, the Prototype kills anyone who tries to leave. It is highly likely that this is exactly what Kickin Chicken experienced.

Picky Piggy

Picky Piggy is a playful Smiling Critter that tries to inspire its friends to eat healthily.

However, her cardboard cutout reveals a much darker secret compared to the others. When we press Picky Piggy's button, she starts listing her favorite things to eat. However, at some point, her food choices start sounding very suspicious.

At some point, it becomes clear that Picky Piggy was essentially describing the Smiling Critters members. This leads us to believe that Picky Piggy had to eat her friends in order to survive. This also suggests that Picky Piggy was the last critter to die (except for Dog Day and Cat Nap).

Here are the main theories on how she died:

  • After consuming all of the critters' bodies, she was left with no food and starved to death.
  • She may have started to cooperate with Cat Nap and the Prototype in exchange for food and might still be alive. As discussed in our article about all the secrets in Chapter 3, food scarcity is what made many toys obedient to the Prototype.

HoppyHopscotch.jpg

Hoppy Hopscotch

Hoppy Hopscoth is the most energetic and impatient member of the Smiling Critters.

The most important part of her cutout voice recordings was when she asked us to jump with her as high as possible. She essentially believed that if we tried hard enough, we could jump and reach the moon.

She told us to jump as high as possible and not to look at our feet because "none of that matters." However, Hoppy starts screaming in the middle of her final jump. This leads us to believe that due to her hyperactive personality, Hoppy was not paying attention to her safety and thus fell to her death.

Crafty Corn

Crafty Corn is a very kind and peaceful member of the critters. She is gifted with great drawing abilities, as we saw her draw in the Smiling Critter's show.

Her voice recordings are relatively vague, but fans have come up with a very believable theory about her death that could absolutely be canon.

In her cutout, she asks us to pass her the red paint while she is drawing. Her voice progressively becomes more aggressive as she insists on getting the paint she wants. It is possible that her request was directed to one of her friends at the time the recording was made.

After not receiving any red paint, Crafty Corn lashes out at the other critter. As soon as she does that, she seems to have acquired red paint and appears relaxed. Fans believe she killed one of the other members in her anger and used their blood for her painting. This action would have turned all of the Smiling Critters against her, which might have led to them collectively killing her or leaving her alone to die.

Bobby Bearhug

Bobby Bearhug is super compassionate and loving. She is the one who cares the most for the other members and is highly affectionate towards them.

Through Bobby's cutout, we find out she was separated from the other Smiling Critters. She sounded scared of being abandoned again and begged us to stay with her.

Although the reason why and how she ended up alone is unclear, it is highly likely that she died alone, starving to death.

Dogday

Dog Day

Dog Day is the brave, kind, and trustworthy leader of the Smiling Critters.

In his voice recordings, he tries to make us leave the factory by playing fetch with us. This is most likely exactly what happened to him. As a responsible leader, Dog Day was trying to warn and protect the rest of the Smiling Critters by encouraging them to leave.

As we now know, the Prototype kills anyone who tries to escape. The one responsible for Dog Day's death is either the Prototype or Cat Nap, who follows all of his orders.

Because of Dog Day's contrary beliefs and efforts to go against the Prototype's will, he was tortured to death. Fans believe we can actually hear Dog Day's legs being cut off in these recordings.

The Smiling Critter's deaths are tragic but also very well-thought-out. We are excited to see more about their origin story and experiences in the factory.
