Spellbound Plot

Spellbound is a fantasy adventure musical animation that takes storytelling to a whole new level, especially for the little ones. However, adults will have just as much fun, considering the deeper meaning behind the plot. Spellbound is about Ellian, who's about to turn 15, and she's planning on celebrating like a princess. However, she soon realizes that there is a curse: on that same day, her parents transform into monsters.

Now the protagonist needs to embark on a journey to save them and bring them back to what they were. Although it seems like a traditional fairy tale with its castle, princesses, and royal family problems, the plot takes a brand-new and unexpected direction. If you're wondering whether you need to get a ticket for the movie theater, don't worry. Spellbound is available on Netflix as well for all families to enjoy from the comfort of their own homes.

Spellbound Cast

Spellbound's cast includes many familiar names, such as Rachel Zegler, who will step into the shoes of the main character, Ellian of Lumbria. Moreover, we can't miss mentioning Nicole Kidman, who stars as Queen Ellesmere, and Javier Bardem, who takes the role of King Solon.

Dee Bradley Baker also takes part as Flink, who's Ellian's pet sidekick, and John Lithgow plays Minister Bolinar - the person who helps Ellian rule the kingdom while her parents are not there. The latter also voices Flink when he swaps bodies with Bolinar after he gets hit by a spell.

Nathan Lane jumps into the fun when Ellian is about to go on a quest through the Dark Forest of Eternal Darkness given to her by Luno, his character. Last, but not least, we see Tituss Burgess as Sunny, the oracle, and Luno's positive opposite. Spellbound was directed by Vicky Jenson, who also worked on Shrek, and includes music from Alan Menken, who was part of the production crew of The Little Mermaid.

Spellbound Viewer Reviews

Like most movies, Spellbound is getting mixed viewer reviews, and it seems like audiences are more than ready to share both their positive and negative comments on multiple platforms. Many claim that the movie had cute twists and funny jokes, even if the comedic moments were mostly aimed at children. Moreover, they stated that the ending is quite refreshing, and it includes elements that are a significant departure from what we're used to seeing in most animated films.

I liked the movie. Sure, it's not a masterpiece, but it's not rubbish either. I liked this little thing that the main character does at the beginning of the film, and at the end, the plot breaks through the fourth wall. The songs are decent; only 2 maybe I liked very much. I watched this movie with the eyes of an “adult,” and to make a long story short, it was enjoyable to watch.

On the other hand, plenty of viewers stated that the film was poorly written and the animation felt cheap. Additionally, they commented that the jokes don't really land and it feels like the entire plot was made of recycled parts. However, everyone seems to agree that the ending was a pleasant surprise.
