The Sims Movie: What to Expect

Kate Gourdman, EA's vice president and the general manager of The Sims franchise, shared her project ambitions in an interview with Variety on September 17, 2024.

We wanted the right partners and to make an impact the size of something like a ‘Barbie’ movie is exactly what we want.

-Kate Gourdman

With their top-tier team selection, we have no doubts The Sims movie will get the hype Gourdman wants—but will the content deserve the hype? So far, things have been looking hopeful, particularly for the Sims players who could not forgive EA for messing up the lore continuation in The Sims 4 and are worried about the adaptation's success.

Gourdman promises classical Sims lore in the film and recognizes the importance of delivering an authentic Sims experience to the loyal fans of the franchise.

There will be Freezer Bunnies. I’m sure a pool without a ladder is somewhere in there, but we haven’t finalized any of those details. But that’s the idea, is to say that it lives within this space. It’s a nod to all of the amazing play and creation and fun that people have had over the last 25 years within ‘The Sims.

-Kate Gourdman

We can't help but speculate about all the Easter eggs EA will pitch to be included in the film, as the idea is to deliver the true Sims experience. At least we'll know for sure that it will be somewhat chaotic, which is definitely authentic.

Another aspect of authenticity that the fan base desperately wants is the spoken language. There's a campaign on social media to have the film in Simlish, which is the original spoken language within the Sims world. There was an answer to this pledge as well.

It’s fun. It’s a great idea, and it’s something we’ll definitely talk about.

-Kate Gourdman

We hope the idea becomes a reality. Many musicians like Katy Perry, Lily Allen, Nelly Furtado, Zedd, Depeche Mode, My Chemical Romance, Paramore, and more, have recorded songs in Simlish for the game series, so we see the potential of expanding on language even further. It truly is a part of the game that many find endearing and a staple to the experience.

The Sims Movie: Upcoming News

We still don't know anything about a potential release date window, nor are we sure what format the project might adopt. Gorman referred to the upcoming film as a "theatrical release" and Miele called it a “big screen” title, but representatives for EA clarified that the distribution plans have not yet been finalized.

All we know is that production is in full force and we need to stay tuned for more. We're all curious to see how this project develops and turns out, whether for better or for worse. The Sims is a life simulation, and while a big part of it is just life, the simulation part might be the trickiest to convey authentically in the film.

We have high expectations and we hope The Sims movie exceeds them. While we wait for more details, stay up to date with some of our other articles:
