Even though Hades 2 is quite similar to the original, there are a ton of new features added to the sequel that elevate the game far beyond its predecessor. While new areas, new enemies, and new gods were all expected additions to the game, Supergiant have also added some farming mini-games, such as mining, planting, and growing crops. Combat is also quite improved, as the new protagonist Melinoe is focused around using spells and incantations which cost Magick, rather than the hack and slash nature of the original game. The game is familiar yet different with a lot more depth and many more mechanics that give players even more choices.

One of the best new features in Hades 2 is animal familiars, which function as pets that follow you around in and out of combat, providing bonuses and helping you get more resources in your runs. Here is how you can get an animal familiar pet in Hades 2!

Hades 2: How to Get An Animal Familiar (Pet)

If you want to unlock the ability to get an animal familiar, you are going to have to defeat Hecate a certain number of times until you hear the "Do bring an animal Familiar along next time, if but to keep things livelier for me!" dialogue. We are currently uncertain when exactly this dialogue can begin, but it should be within the first 15-20 hours depending on your success. It could also be tied to unlocking certain incantations in the Cauldron, so keep progressing and eventually you will see it.

Once this dialogue option ends, you will be able to find a new incantation in the Cauldron back in the Crossroads, called 'Faith of Familiar Spirits'. This incantation requires 2x Nectar and 1x Lotus, which are pretty common materials that you can find in your runs. Once the incantation is complete, you will receive a 'Witch's Delight' item which you can give to certain animals in the game, making them your companions. Animal companions provide permanent bonuses to your runs, such as increased Health, as well as the ability to get some extra resources, such as Psyche and Fish.

There are currently only two animals which you can turn into familiars, Frinos the frog and Toula the cat. Frinos can be found in the chamber in which you spawn after finishing a run, and Toula has a chance to appear on the dock in the Rift of Thessaly region on the Surface route. Once you go near them, you will have a new interaction key which you can press and give them the 'Witch's Delight'. Here are the bonuses for both of these animal familiars:

Frinos

  • Life Bond: Frinos can grant you a +20/30/40 health depending on his level.
  • Soul Bond: Frinos can compel wayward spirits once/twice/three times per night for Psyche depending on his level.
  • Strength Bond: Frinos can leap on foes and deliver 10/20/30 damagedepending on his level.

Toula

  • Heart Bond: Gain a Death Defy from Toula which will put you back to 10/20/30 health depending on his level.
  • Soul Bond: Toula can catch one/two/three fish per night depending on his level.
  • Claw Bond: When caught in your sprint, Toula will attack an enemy once/twice/thrice for up to 99 damage depending on his level.

That is everything you need to know about unlocking animal familiars in Hades 2. This is one of the best new features in the game, and being able to have a frog or a cat join you in battle is both hilarious and very on-brand for the game.
