Helldivers 2 Server Capacity Raised to 800,000 Players

The online co-op shooter Helldivers 2 has seen immense popularity since its release, with players flocking to defend Super Earth across its procedurally generated planets. However, the influx of recruits has put a strain on the game's servers. After multiple updates to expand capacity, developer Arrowhead Game Studios has now boosted servers to support 800,000 concurrent players.

Ongoing Server Expansions for Helldivers 2

Helldivers 2 rapidly exceeded the small studio's expectations, hitting over 450,000 simultaneous logins shortly after launch. This overwhelmed the servers, resulting in long wait times for games. 

"Everyone should be able to get past the login screen now," said Arrowhead CEO Johan Pilestedt after one such upgrade. 

In a tweet, Pilestedt expressed astonishment that a studio of only 100 developers was having to contend with 800,000 users. "How crazy is this message from a studio of ~100 devs?" he remarked.

The CEO also acknowledged the server upgrades were allowing some team members to shift focus to new content and features. While optimizations continue, others are "working on some real cool stuff," Pilestedt hinted.

Ongoing Issues with Helldivers 2 

Despite expanded capacity, Helldivers 2 isn't quite out of the woods yet when it comes to server congestion we still warn the players that they may still encounter "light queues" at peak times even after upgrading to 800,000 CCU.

The demand for Helldivers 2 underscores the series' growth in popularity. The original 2015 Helldivers saw no more than 10,000 concurrent players on Steam at its height. Barely a few weeks after launch, the sequel has already drawn 80 times that number across PlayStation and PC.

In fact, Helldivers 2 became one of the top-performing PlayStation games on Steam shortly after its release.

While keeping up with server load for such an unexpected smash hit hasn't been easy, Arrowhead appears committed to enabling all Helldivers recruits to defend democracy across the galaxy together. As capacity expands further, the masses can unite without queue frustrations getting in the way.
