Is Helldivers 2 Playable on PS4? Compatibility Guide

Helldivers 2 has arrived and has seen great success within a few days of its launch. With its predecessor launching on both PS4 and PS3, fans are wondering - can you play Helldivers 2 on PlayStation 4? Unfortunately, the answer is no. Here is everything you need to know about Helldivers 2's PS4 compatibility.

Can you Play Helldivers 2 on PS4?

Developer Arrowhead Game Studios has confirmed that Helldivers 2 is only releasing on PS5 and PC. There are currently no plans for a PS4 version of the chaotic co-op shooter sequel.

This departs from the original Helldivers which spanned PS3, PS4, and PS Vita when it launched in 2015. However, the technical leap to Helldivers 2 seemingly requires the power of current-gen hardware.

Why Isn't Helldivers 2 on PS4?

Helldivers 2 makes a massive graphical jump over the first game, utilizing the PS5's superior horsepower to deliver larger environments and hordes of enemies.

As modern games push graphical boundaries, last-gen consoles inevitably get left behind. Helldivers 2 is likely no exception, with PS5 and high-end PCs offering the best experience.

Developer Arrowhead and publisher PlayStation have announced no intentions to bring Helldivers 2 to PS4 - now or in the future.

Considering the sequel's heavy focus on next-gen features and graphics, a last-gen port seems unlikely. Arrowhead seems focused on leveraging the power of PS5 and PC rather than accommodating weaker PlayStation 4 hardware.

What Can PS4 Owners Do?

PS4 gamers keen on playing Helldivers 2 have the following options:

• Upgrade to PS5 to play the native next-gen version
• Build/purchase a decent gaming PC to play the Steam release
• Watch playthroughs and gameplay footage on YouTube/Twitch

While PS4 owners are unfortunately left out for this sequel, the original Helldivers remains playable on last-gen Sony consoles. Avid fans can still enjoy those co-op adventures while hoping Helldivers 3 returns to PS4! 

Helldivers 2 sadly leaves PS4 owners behind, but the co-op shooter sequel makes full use of powerful PS5 and PC hardware for a true next-gen experience.
