Patch 14.20 has been here for a while now and it brought lots of changes to the League of Legends meta. They're manifesting through item and champion buffs and nerfs. In this article, we will take a look at the best mid-lane champ picks for Ranked so you can climb up the Ranked ladder in LoL.
We will give several examples of champions per tier, so you can decide for yourself which pick fits your play style and which midlaner will give you the best chances of carrying your team to victory.
Given how much the meta can shake things up, you should pay attention to each patch as your favorite champion might be hit with the nerf hammer, as Riot unleashes a new broken champion on the mid-lane.

Tier List Explanation
This tier list will examine some of the most-played League of Legends champions in the mid-lane. Keep in mind that this is for Emerald+ divisions.
- B-Tier: Viable and reliable in most situations, you can manage rather decently.
- A-Tier: Great options but lacking just slightly either in terms of damage or utility.
- S-Tier: The best champions you can use to ensure you are always victorious.
NOTE: Although this tier list strives to be as objective as possible in terms of viability, you should not limit yourself to strictly adhere to this list, but rather experiment and see which champion feels fun to play with.

B-Tier Mid Lane Champions
Pantheon used to struggle a bit but he got buffed in the recent LoL patch. His W damage is better giving him enough of a kick to end up in B tier.
Twisted Fate finds himself in the B tier, despite his global ult. However, a good TF would utilize his kit to its fullest to help the whole team.
Katarina is back to being a little unstable, completely dependent on the player's skill. She's a very hard-to-play champion. Keep in mind that there's a difference between a regular Kata player and a good Kata player. She can carry like no other but it will take a lot of experience to do it.
Annie has a lot of potential, having a shield and a stun in her kit, but she's definitely not on top of her game in the current patch. Still a good choice though.
Vel'Koz is not going to reach the top of the meta this time, as his kit has been butchered by the devs, leaving you forced to play as a support in most cases.

Zed might be a fan-favorite in League of Legends but this assassin is definitely not the best pick in the current midlaner meta.
Ekko has seen better days, but he's good with roaming and neutral objectives, which can give your game a great boost.
With amazing burst and mobility, Aurora performs decently in Ranked, especially in the early game. Just make sure you don't fall behind.
Definitely opt for toplaner Ryze if you main him. He's a decent choice but currently, the mid-lane isn't the best option for him.
Heimer is really easy and fun to play as. Just place 3 turrets and you're good to go. The huge downside is that he can't solo carry and you'll have to depend on the rest of the team to do the heavy lifting while you're winning the mid lane.

A-Tier Mid Lane Champions
Veigar's Q got slightly nerfed but don't get it twisted - he's still a very decent midlaner, who scales infinitely and has an OP E Ability.
Kassadin is another scaling champion that can turn into a late-game monster.
This assassin seems to be doing way better in patch 14.20. Akali brings lots of mobility and burst to Ranked, if that's what you're looking for. However, she's one of those champions who either carry or feed.
Aurelion Sol is in an amazing place in this League of Legends season. He's amazing in team fights and has great solo carry potential.
With excellent roaming, great mobility and burst, Diana is a great choice for Ranked. She'll have the whole map under control.

Cassiopeia is still in the A-tier, doing pretty well, although she can be a little weak in the game.
Naafiri is also keeping her spot from the last League of Legends patch. Don't forget that her packmates can block skillshots and you can use her E to go over walls.
Swain is those champions who are easy and satisfying to play with, thanks to his great damage.
Neeko is a very fun League of Legends champion to pick up. She has some unique deceptive abilities and a versatile playstyle. A good Neeko can outsmart opponents easily, but a bad one wouldn't know how to use her kit to it's fullest.

S-Tier Mid Lane Champions
The menace is back! In the last LoL patch, Yasuo was hit badly due to crit itemization becoming weaker. However, this time around he's getting a buff to his Q and R, making him unstoppable once more.
Yone and Yasuo always go hand in hand. It's not surprising that the two brothers end up among the best midlaners in LoL. Patch 14.20 buffs his Q's Critical Strike Damage.
Ahri offers amazing mobility, charm, and decent damage. What more can you ask for? She's definitely one of those 'classic' League of Legends champions.
Lux is absolutely killing it in this patch. Her kit has everything you need in Ranked - damage, shield, short cooldowns, and utility.

Recently Syndra returned to the midlane meta and she's here to stay, offering some amazing clears and bursts.
Don't let Vex's looks fool you. This small girl is hard to counter, especially by mobile champions, such as Yasuo who's in the S-tier as well.
Sylas is a versatile duelist who can easily carry you out of low elo. He's bringing great damage to the Summoner's Rift but he's also quite sustainable in lane.
Hwei might be difficult to play LoL champion, but he's definitely worth investing some time in. Despite being squishy, he's versatile and clears waves easily.

Galio has been a very stable champion pick for a few patches now. If you're looking for a tanky midlaner - he's the guy for you.
Similar to Galio, LeBlanc is keeping her S-tier spot. She might be difficult to master but it's worth the time, as she has some amazing outplay potential.
Xerath is a champion that's hard to play against. He ends up constantly bombarding the enemy with long-range abilities. Xerath is the king of zoning and lane bullying.
