In Manor Lords, you need a strong military force to defend your lands. You can order your villagers to join the militia if you have the appropriate equipment but they won’t be able to stop the armies you will have to face. You could hire mercenaries to protect your people if you have the funds. The other option is to acquire a retinue.
Your retinue will consist of professional soldiers who are loyal to you, stronger than usual militia, and customizable. You will need these warriors to deal with the stronger opponents and grow into a city that can defend itself. Here’s how to hire and maintain your retinue in Manor Lords.

How to Acquire Your Retinue in Manor Lords
Before you can unlock your retinue in Manor Lords, you need to build your manor. You can do this by reaching the Small Village Level with your settlement and having the appropriate materials available. You will need 5 timber, 20 planks, and 15 stone.
When you construct your manor, the retinue will appear. It will only have five soldiers at the ready with a maximum of twelve. Even with their small numbers, they can still make a big difference in any battle. If they die or you simply wish to fill empty positions, you can hire new members of your retinue.

How to Hire New Members for Your Retinue in Manor Lords
In your military tab, you will find that your retinue now has an icon where you can customize your soldiers. By using this option, you can also hire new soldiers. It will cost you 50 Treasury for each new member. Please notice that this is not Regional Wealth. You gain money in your treasury by collecting taxes.
You can customize the weapons, armor, and colors of your retinue from this menu as well. You can also change their name but be aware this customization does not affect their stats in any way. It is simply a way to add a little personal flair to your army in Manor Lords.

When your retinue has been in combat, they will earn skill points you can use to increase their efficiency. Armor upgrades are also available. When you first acquire your retinue, there is a capacity of twelve units but you can build Garrison Towers to raise the limit. With time and experience, you could have an elite army ready for battle.
That’s everything you need to know about acquiring and maintaining a retinue in Manor Lords. You can hire more and customize them as long as you have the funds in your treasury. I hope this helps. Check out our other guides for Manor Lords below.
