No Rest for the Wicked not only features a dense and vertical world to explore, filled with secrets, shortcuts, and platforming puzzles, but the game also has a story-rich narrative campaign with amazing characters and voice acting. Moon Studios became known for their art style and story in Ori and the Blind Forest, and they are pulling no punches when it comes to all of the cutscenes, writing, and dialogue in No Rest for the Wicked. One of the earlier quests in the game is called 'Of Rats and Raiders,' and even though most of the tasks are fairly simple to understand, there is a specific part that can leave you scratching your head as you scour the entire city of Sacrament.
This part has to do with an NPC named Rattigan, who is captured and locked inside of a cage in Sacrament, and if you want to progress through the main story, you are going to find a key and free him. This key is a little hard to find, so in this article, we are going to show you how and where you can get it, in order to free Rattigan from his cage in No Rest for the Wicked.

No Rest for the Wicked: How to Free Rattigan
In order to progress the 'Of Rats and Raiders' quest, you are going to have to make a deal with Rattigan, who is captured and locked inside of a cage. The deal is that if you free him from his prison, he will tell you where you will be able to find Darak Falstead, who plans to assault the city of Sacrament. Even though his dialogue hints that you are going to need to find a key in order to unlock the cage, it does not really tell you where you need to go in order to find it. In true Dark Souls fashion, you are going to need to find some clues by exploring the area that surrounds the cages.
If you make your way to the tower on the south side of Rattigan, you will locate two guards who are talking to each other and by eavesdropping, you can find out that a third guard named Gerard was recently drunk and went to dunk his head in the fountain. This is your clue for finding the key to Rattigan's cage, and you can easily tell by the text of the dialogue being orange.

The fountain can be found on the northwest side of Sacrament, close to the graveyard and Crucible dungeon locations. Once you reach the fountain, you will find Gerard sleeping right next to a bench, and by interacting with him, you will receive the key to Rattigan's cage. You can now go back to free Rattigan and continue the 'Of Rats and Raiders' quest, which will eventually lead you to the Black Trench area in the sewers of Sacrament. There are no choices to make, and you will have to continue down this path if you want to progress through the story of the game. Here is a quick summary on how you can free Rattigan from his cage:
- Speak to Rattigan.
- Eavesdrop on the guards (Optional).
- Go to the fountain on the northwest side of Sacrament.
- Pick up the key.
- Go back and free Rattigan.
That is everything you need to know about freeing Rattigan from his cage during the 'Of Rats and Raiders' quest in No Rest for the Wicked. The game does not really hold your hand when it comes to exploration and quests, and sometimes you can find yourself wondering how you can progress through the story.
