The Blizzard devs have released a new feature to be tested on the World of Warcraft Public Test Realm, namely Elemental Rune Dungeons. We will take a look at everything we know so far as well as some feedback from the Classic community, seeing how many players are currently grinding in Retail.

Although the WoW Classic team is much smaller in comparison to its retail counterpart, the majority of the player base have embraced this new approach by Blizzard, revitalizing old content for new WoW enthusiasts as well as veterans of the MMORPG wishing to relive the glory days. Having that in mind, here is what we know so far about Elemental Rune Dungeons in WoW Cata Classic.

Elemental Rune Dungeons can be activated in most Cataclysm Classic heroic dungeons (excluding Zul'Aman and Zul'Gurub) by interacting with the Mysterious Elemental Device near the dungeon's entrance. You will see a prompt "Activate Protocol Inferno".

Here is everything you need to know when going into the 4.4.1 PTR to test it:

  • Upon activating Protocol Inferno, a floating element will appear and all 5 players in the group will need to channel it.
  • For PTR testing, we’ve set the requirement to one (1) player activating the floating element.
  • Elemental Rune Protocol Inferno dungeons can also be queued-for by using the automated Group Finder tool, and they require a minimum item level of 346 to queue for. When using automated Group Finder to queue for these, players will not need to interact with the Mysterious Elemental Device. Protocol Inferno will already be active.
  • Activating Protocol Inferno will grant creatures in the dungeon the “Fury of the Firelord” buff, increasing their health and damage.
  • Each boss in Protocol Inferno dungeons will drop 2x of a new currency, Fissure Stone Fragments, per player. If players have defeated all of the other bosses in the dungeon, the final boss of each dungeon will drop an extra 3 Fissure Stone Fragments.
  • This currency can be used to purchase items from the new NPC, Kyanite Stonetender, in Stormwind and Orgrimmar.
  • The intended starting iLvl for these dungeons is 346.

I wish they made every heroic item available, then i would have something to do with my twinks.

You can purchase the following items by using the Fissure Stone Fragment currency:

So if I’m understanding this post you plan to make “cata dungeons the way they were before” sounds like you’re still following that pre nerf firelands mindset. Lets see how long it lasts.

And that covers everything you need to know about the new Elemental Rune Dungeons coming in World of Warcraft Cataclysm Classic. Although some players would have preferred the bosses to have new mechanics, this is still a good enough challenge for players wanting to complete end-game content and also gear up for the raids.
